This upcoming AI generation/glitch project has been an interesting topic for me to take on, to be entirely frank, I am not a fan of generative AI use but I also find it interesting to find out how we can repeatedly glitch and distort images and video to the point of nearly breaking to create amazing and visually interesting effects. I hope to be able to edit and distort the images i do generate throughout this project enough create something i consider more original. The Labs we have done so far to distort said images have been really fun and i feel i am attaining a good grasp of how i want to put all of them together for my final Glitch project!
To expand a bit on my thoughts on AI, here's a bit more reasoning as to why is am not the biggest fan of it. Now, I’m not opposed to AI as a whole, I actually do believe that it has the potential to become a valuable tool, and in some cases, it very much is! (specifically in the medical field) I personally see art as something that is inherently human-made, whether it be painting, digital art, collage, photography, etc. Art is subjective at the end of the day, it is not a matter of effort, time, or how “bad” or “good” it is, it is about what it evokes in someone and the expression of the artist. All art is also derivative so by originality, I don't mean to create something that's never been done before because that is nearly impossible. All art takes inspirations and elements from other things and often combines them to create something new, it's just that to me, the human aspect of it is what makes it art because even if we are using tools such as cameras, or digital programs to draw and edit, or make collages out of already previously existing media and cut them out to put them all together, there is still a person behind it specifically choosing and framing the artwork which makes them valid mediums of art. Another thing is the negative impact it has on our environment and ethics, AI not only takes an enormous amount of energy to generate things but also uses up a lot of water to cool down their servers which could go to more important things. As for ethics, there is almost zero regulation on AI and it has led to a mass spread of misinformation, in which people can easily create exploitative material of others, have their data (including sensitive information) scraped from websites for AI training use, and enables corporations to cut corners and replace some workers with AI simply to save a bit more on products/services as the main goals of corporations is to profit, even at the expense of their employees and consumers. AI to me is a powerful set of algorithmic technology, but in its current form, I believe that its efforts to create art are just inauthentic and come off as soulless cash grabs.
